South Beach Park / Rio Mar Reef
At the End of 17th Street just east of A1A. Widest beach in the
area with lifeguards, picnic tables, restrooms and showers.
Surfers ride the waves just to the south side of the beach, there
is a nice clean break in this area, it is a shallow sandy bottom. You can
get a nice long ride. To the South of South Beach , this is called the Cove,
there are no other public Beaches, but there are a few walking acesses,
but there is no parking or security of a park. Surfing
in the cove area is good, but hard to get to, unless you know someone
that lives in one of the many beach side residential communities.
Divers there is no reef at this beach,
though to the north about 100 yards is the begining of the Rio Mar Reef,
which is one of the largest expances of reef along the beach. If you are
up for a long walk in soft sand, then South beach could be considered an
acess to Rio mar reef. If you dont want to do the walk then you need
to go to the Rio Mar Drive Public Entrance, it has 4 parking spots, and it
closes at dusk. An Alternate entry point is at Flamevine
Drive. entrance which is just N. of Rio Mar Drive Entrance.
